Sunriser Hyderabad in this year’s IPL, has had a nasty awakening. Sunriser Hyderabad has had a terrible 2025 season after a stellar 2024 campaign in which they were very close to winning the championship. It now appears pretty bleak for the Sunriser Hyderabad camp after their seven-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans on Sunday, April 6, which was their fourth straight setback.
Despite his understandable lack of enthusiasm, head coach Daniel Vettori remained upbeat during the post-game press conference.
“Obviously, it’s disappointing. We haven’t yet been able to put performances together, and the team has big expectations,” Vettori remarked.
“Sunriser Hyderabad believe that everyone in the room is aware of it, and the last four games haven’t been particularly close. Every IPL side experiences a run of losses at some point, so going forward will undoubtedly be difficult for us. We now have five days off before facing Punjab, who have been outstanding so far in the competition. We must prepare ourselves for the match.
Sunriser Hyderabad strategy for the 2024 season was to outscore their opponents with their outrageous style of play, which resulted in them scoring more than 250 goals for amusement. In the opening match of this season, they came within a run of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s score of 287, setting an all-time IPL record. Ishan Kishan’s addition to an already mysterious batting order got off to a fantastic start in the tournament opener, when the left-hander hammered a ton against RR.
But ever then, he and the team have had trouble getting going, and their gung-ho strategy has typically backfired.

Sunriser Hyderabad managment and Vettori believed that his team didn’t make many mistakes against GT in terms of fundamentals. “We expected 160–170 to be a solid score at the beginning of the day, and I believe they realized that the wicket was extremely difficult. We were aware that those players would form a relationship and then, ideally, launch an offensive on the back end if they could get in. We needed 20 more runs to put pressure on them and then bowl extremely well, but we were pretty near to that in the end. However, I believe they had a perfect grasp of what was needed.
“I mean, I hate to say it, but it’s probably been, like I said, it’s all been all three disciplines haven’t been able to click in a game. We look back to last year and our skills were putting big scores on and then sort of holding on for dear life with the ball. But we haven’t been able to put those big scores together through a combination of things.
But the good thing about the IPL is there’s quick turn arounds; there’s opportunities to do well and there’s individual performances within those games. So, I think there’s still some confidence within the batting group, but it’s the collective that needs to stand up now: Daniel Vettori on Sunriser Hyderabad vs Gujrat Titans.
“I believe that evaluating conditions is the key for us. And tonight’s conditions were quite difficult. This wasn’t your average Hyderabad wicket, after all. It moved really slowly. Additionally, we were aware before we began that we were aiming for a score between 160 and 170. And I felt that Ishan in particular did a fairly nice job of navigating the powerplay, scoring goals, and making some good shots. Therefore, I believe we know the approach that will be effective; nonetheless, we must respect the circumstances and do a thorough assessment. It’s likely that we haven’t done it as well. Additionally, we must appreciate other teams’ bowling prowess, as they have put a lot of preparation into our top three.
